A St. Bernard is a very loving dog to either babies, adults and other pet animals. My daughter has one and she is very happy with him. We also had 2 basset hounds when my children were still little, also 2 black labs, a golden retriever (engineered a hole and left us) and the last one was a German Shepherd named Amadeus.
If you are getting a dog ---make sure you train it the right way and not let it get away with anything. They are like children --very smart if you give them clear directions. Watch "Far from the Madding Crowd" --a Julie Christie movie. You will see a Shepherd dog who took care of lambs (sheep). The pig movie "Babe" is wonderful too. Just for fun watch these movies-you might learn something.
