CMS content management System is good for fast development of website.
Self code is also good for specific application in which you cannot use CMS. There are many types of CMS like joomla,Drupal etc. Drupal Better for Extensibility and Large Sites,Joomla Easier for the Non-Geeks. By self code you can become expert in source code but it takes time to learn. While usign CMS you can develop sites in short time.
