I think it would be great to be able to raise the head and foot of the bed for reading,etc. The ones with the high-low feature are even more, but could be a consideration if one would need in-home care in the future.

No need to elaborate with this answer. the D90/D5000 are digital SLR cameras, and the SX1 isn't, it's that simple. Although it has a lot of bells and whistles, it won't beat the image quality of the D5000/D90.
