If they have a valid green card, then I think the sentence is appropriate and reflects many of the issues that Americans have with immigrants right now.

Doubtful that the INS would even show up to deport these guys anymore, if called by the court.

months"? I'd rather have them learn english while they are being deported, but what say you?

Leaning English as a punishment for robbery seems a little light to me. I like where the judge is going in making someone in the U.S. who is a resident learn English, but i would have imprisoned them AND made them learn English.
After all, a translator is costing tax payers money.

If they have broken the law and are convicted, a judge can assign "creative" punishments. If they are legal aliens and the crime isn't too bad, perhaps I can see it.

Yes, make them learn English. And if anyone wants to move to New Orleans, they should have to learn French non? And why stop there! Let's make all passports come with a language requirement, want to visit Quebec? Better get a Quebecois passport? Mexico? Time for a passporto!

Think. Step into someone else's shoes. Remember most of us are immigrants children or grandchildren.

(and yes, I am prepared for the thumbs down...so have at it.)

More like "resident evil" . I'm not sure what is going on, but some of these immigrants shouldn't even be in our country. They have a history of committing crimes and should have been deported at the first crime. I think what the judge is saying is that until the trial is over, they need to speak English. I hope his intent is , that if found guilty and after they finish their sentence , the judge would make sure immigration would take over from here.

The judge is doing this to help these guys out in the long run. If they don't like it, then put them in prison or deport them. Personally I think that was the best sentance that they could have wished for

Yes, it is part of their rehabilitation for a robbery they pleaded guilty to. Perhaps if they learn English and get a job they won't need to rob people.
