Default I have seen iPhone handsets advertised for sale on eBay as 'unlocked'. What does...

...this mean? I would like an iPhone but would prefer to keep my pay as you go vodaphone network number. Is this possible?

Yes it means that the previous owner has had it unlocked. Meaning it is no longer locked to one particular network so you can put any SIM in it.

it means you can put whatever sim you like in it. Right now iphones are only o2 when bought in a shop

if it's unlocked you should be able to use it on any network

it means you should be able to put your own sim card in, but be aware that unlocked is not the same as unblocked. it will only work as long as the original network has not blocked the phone.

everyone is right on this one, it is open to all networks sim cards, but not 3's simcard.
