Default 401k investing?

Can you have your 401k contributions invested in particular stores/stocks? Right now all my investments are grouped into "stable funding" but I would like to invest in discount stores such as dollar tree, family dollars etc. I feel since the economy is slow these stock in these stores are going to blow up. Is that something I can do thruogh 401k or would that be a totally different and seperate investment transaction and if so what would be my first step to get r' done.
