Default So, is Vista any good (it comes with my laptop)? Who benefits best from it?...

...(Gamers? Multimedia editors? Or?)? Am considering removing it and downgrading to XP Pro, but some people just love the RAM consuming eye candy and is preventing me from doing it.
hihosilver666:
Well I do have 2 gigs of ram in my Vaio, but I do lots of multimedia and 3D rendering. So let's just hope that their RAM usage don't compete.

Exactly. Didn't intend to buy it either. It just happened to be pre-installed in the new computer. And it does look pretty, the baby loves staring at it.

You have to ask yourself why people complain about Vista so much! It's quite simply that people are slightly scared of change and yes Vista has some issues but they are being rectified and has far has who benefits I would say that the majority of users will in the near future, it's all down to what you want out of your PC!

Who benefits most from Vista? Microsoft does. It has no real advantages over XP, Mac OS X, or most versions of Linux. During the pre-release hype Vista was supposed to have a lot of new features, but they couldn't get them working well and cut them from the final release.

You're right that the only real 'benefit' from using Vista is the pretty eye candy, which isn't even all that great once you've seen Linux's Compiz Fusion. Microsoft released Vista long before it was ready because of the pressure. In general it is too unstable and full of vulnerabilities, leaving itself wide open for a lot of viruses. Before Vista was even released microsoft had a list of vulnerabilities that they were going to patch with service pack 1.

I wouldn't recommend buying it or upgrading to it at all. You do, however, already have it, but XP is by far more secure and stable. XP will also run better with your hardware. You called it 'ram consuming eye candy' which is exactly right. Vista wasn't designed well and requires a lot of ram and a pretty decent processor just to run. If you threw XP on that same hardware it most likely would run faster and smoother, which is valuable with multimedia, yes?

Vista have a lot of compatibility issue, now the only problem with downgrading is, that may not even be an option for you, as most computer that come already with Vista on it. Do not have the drivers to support XP, meaning you may not even be able to instal XP onto the computer.

If you really wanted a XP computer you really needed to buy one with XP already on it.

vista is fine, theres nothing wrong with it providing you have 2 gigs of ram, vista ultimate runs fine for me with 2 gigs, it never uses more than 50%, its ignorance that leads people to diss vista, the same people that try to install it on old tin boxes.
