Default What are the security risks associated with letting a neighbor use your wireless...

...network? I don't really want to do it, but my neighbor keeps bugging me saying that she will pay me $10 per month. To me this sounds like a bad idea but I need more info because she won't leave me alone until I have a valid reason for saying "no".

She wants the password, but us just to type it in for her. I know that it will be saved on her computer and not shared any further but...every time our connection goes down (which it does a lot) I don't want her coming over and asking about it or complaining. Also, will this slow down my connection? Are my files safe? I don't want to start a whole thing here, so I need your help with the negative aspects.

By the way, I have only met her once and my wife has never met her and the one meeting we had consisted of her asking to use our wireless network! I gave the excuse about our network not being reliable & now she is leaving notes on our doorstep. Help me out guys, I don't want to be rude-I just want the facts to back up my refusal. Thanks
And if on the very off chance the neighbor in question is reading this...
We are not bad people, we just believe that there are certain things you don't ask of a stranger, sorry.
She's only sort of a neighbor. She actually is a caregiver or whatnot for a couple of ladies who live there. The lady who asked is there all day 5 days a week. I feel bad for her but we work hard for our money and cannot afford a possible disaster for the $10/mo that we do not need. I hope she isn't going door to door asking all the neighbors
I am NOT the one giving thumbs down! Thank you ALL for responding.

Well for starters YOU will be liable for anything that they have searched on the net for...

If they download music/movies...

If they look at explicit material...

It will all come back to YOU if company's every look into who's downloading their material they will see the IP given out by YOUR router and you will assume full responsibility because your name is on the contract with the ISP...

Your files should be fine if you disable file sharing and just use it as a gateway to the internet....

My suggestion is that you tell her point blank NO and close the door... Also get a stronger encryption like WPA2 because if your using WEP or WPA and they are vicious when you tell them NO... it is easy to crack them...
