Is Avast anti-virus any good?
Now that AVG is no longer free, is this a good alternative? I can't get it to work with my email. I have to disable the email scanner in order to get my mail. Is there any solution to this?__________________________

Nope ! It's not good antivirus because we can easily get that cracked versions on Internet at free of cost. Try to get the antivirus which are not easily available on Internet and have more security.

Yes but if you want you can also try to use the NOD32 anti-virus to keep your computer safe from bad sectors that will depreciated its performance.

I am using avast antivirus from last 6 months and i must say Avast is very good Anti virus for your PC.
