norton is one of the worst sorry to tell you that but its true but they do make the most money because everyone knows them but compared to the following FREE anti viruses nothing is nothing but a system hog

Avast
Avg

get one or the other i recommend Avast but it does slow you down a little bit
AVG is good too
google them

No Norton is definatley not the best!
Use avg
http://www.grisoft.com

also heres the programs i had back when i used windows, i prefered 98 to 2000 xp etc so theyll all work.

Opera web browser (email client and popup blocker combined)
Avg antivirus
Ad aware free for antispyware (I think that the win98 version no longer gets updates so ill just pass on what a friend said, and reccomend spybot)
tiny personal firewall (this is the smallest firewall ive used, most take a few hundred mhz constantly and this is barely noticable in the background)
