Problem with Apache under ubuntu php5?

libphp5.so is not being generated when I sudo apt-get install php5
this is giving me a giant headace any help is greatly appreciated, I have spent two hours trying to set up a simple apache server, if everything in ubuntu is this freaking hard I might just have to go back to windows. I know it isn't ubuntus fault, but it seems I just keep running into error after error after error.
