There are two types of OS(Operating System).
C.U.I. (character User Interface) works on Texts, digits etc. G.U.I.(graphics User Interface) works on Texts, digits and also with graphics which makes it very popular and easy to operate. UNIX is C.U.I. Whereas Linux is G.U.I.

Hi, the first answerer is completely wrong.
Unix was an OS designed in the late 60's. That specific operating system no longer exists, and now Unix is a term given to a group of operating systems that behave and work in a similar way. Any operating system that works and behaves like unix is callled a unix like operating system and linux is a unix like operating system, BSD is another unix like operating system even though BSD is a direct descendant of Unix, it is not 100% Unix. The core of Mac OS X which is Darwin is also Unix like. Some companies which can afford the money can get a unix certification for their unix like operating system, this certification is not important but it gives u the right to call your system unix.
