choice I heard UBUNTU Is good? also will I b able to use programs I use on windows such as msn, etc with UBUNTU?

Linux is a great OS and from what I have heard Ubuntu is about as user friendly as it gets, you could also try fedora too, very user friendly and comes with some amount of software packages.
And yes you can use the linux equivanents of chat programs. I believe most versions of linux use pidgin (formerly GAIM) to talk on MSN and AIM and all that.
