why do i become outbid as soon as i place a bid on ebay?

when you set your bid, you set your maximum bid, not the next amount you want. eBay then bits the next amount available, if someone else's max bid is larger it makes their bid, then yours until one is larger than the other. It doesn't jump straight to your max bid, just the next increment over the current one.
To prevent this just increase your max bid to what your willing to pay ( at the time) and hope they haven't already out bid it. The best way to win is to wait till the last minute, and place a large bid, this way you have a chance to beat the max bid on record, and they don't have time to increase it.
